Philippines rejoices as Janine Tugonon is Miss Universe runner-up

Miss Universe is an annual international beauty contest that is run by the Miss Universe Organization. The contest was founded in 1952 by California clothing company Pacific Mills. The pageant became part of Kayser-Roth and then Gulf+Western Industries, before being acquired by Donald Trump in 1996.The pageant is broadcast on NBC, simulcast in Spanish on Telemundo and (starting 2013) webcast on Xbox Live.
In 1998, Miss Universe changed its name from Miss Universe, Inc. to Miss Universe Organization and the headquarters moved from Los Angeles, California, to New York City that year. Donald Trump brought in a new team of professionals to the contest headed by its new CEO, Molly Miles, and president Maureen Reidy.[6] The contest would use the slogan "Redefined for Today" for promotion of the pageants.[7]
In 1998, the logo of Miss Universe – "the woman with stars" – was born, representing the beauty and responsibility of women around the Universe.

The 2012 Miss Universe is Olivia Culpo, from United States. She won the title on December 19, 2012.

American Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss Universe 2012 at a gala ceremony on Wednesday.

Philippines’ Janine Tugonon was adjudged the first runner-up followed by Venezuela’s Irene Esser.

Janine showed extreme poise and intelligence in answering the question from judge Nigel Barker who asked: As an international ambassador do you believe that speaking English is a prerequisite to be Miss Universe? Why or why not?

In her response, Janine said, "For me being Miss Universe is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language, it's about being able to influence and inspire other people. So whatever language you have as long as your heart is deserving and you have a strong mind to show to people, then you can be Miss Universe."

Joining Olivia and Janine in the top 5 are Miss Venezuela Irene Sofia Esser Quintero, Miss Australia Renae Ayris, and Miss Brazil Gabriela Markus.
Janine's finish continues the impressive performance by the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant beginning with Venus Raj in 2010 (3rd runner-up) and Shamcey Supsup in 2011 (2nd runner-up).

India’s Shilpa Singh made it to the top 16 spot, but failed to progress further.

Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes of Angola crowned Culpo as the new Miss Universe at the glittering ceremony held at Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

As many as 89 beauty queens from around the world descended on Las Vegas Wednesday night to compete for the title of Miss Universe.
