New AdSense Beta Matched content units

Matched content is a free recommendation tool that offers you a simple way to promote your articles to your site visitors. By making it easy for your readers to find the content that they're interested in, you can increase your site's page views, the time spent on your site, reader loyalty, ad impressions, and ultimately ad revenue.

With Matched content units, you choose the pages where you'd like the recommendations to appear, then AdSense promotes the articles on your site that are most relevant to the readers of those pages. Matched content recommendations are based on topic similarity and are personalized for the reader.

Some important things to know about Matched content units:

  •     They bring relevant content to the attention of your users, which can help increase page views and time on site.
  •     You can place Matched content units on any of the pages on your eligible sites.
  •     They don’t count towards your Google content ad limit per page.
  •     Recommendations are within-site, for example, if you have two sites and, then the recommendations we generate for each site will be internal to that site. Note that we only generate recommendations from pages that have Google ads or Matched content units on them.
  •     These units work on mobile, tablet, and desktop.
  •     They are not eligible for use in experiments.

Example :

Check if your site is approved for Matched content

To be eligible for Matched content, your site must first meet our minimum requirements for traffic volume and number of unique pages. You can find out if your site has been approved for Matched content by checking the "Site management" section in your AdSense account.

To check the approval status of your site:
  1.     Sign in to your AdSense account.
  2.     Click the gear icon and select Settings.
  3.     In the sidebar, under “Account”, click Site management.
  4.     Under the "Owned" tab, check the table for a "Matched content" column:
  •         If you don't see the "Matched content" column, then your site has not yet been approved.
  •         If you do see the "Matched content" column, check the status of each of your sites in the table. You may place Matched content units on any of the pages of your sites marked as "Approved" or "Ready" .

Create a Matched content unit

To create a new Matched content unit:
1. Generate the ad code.

To generate the ad code for a Matched content unit:
  •         Create an ad unit in the usual way, making sure to choose an ad size that fits your layout, and to select “Matched content” from the Ad type drop-down in the process.
  •         To get the best fit for your layout, you might want to use a custom ad size. When using a custom size, we recommend choosing an ad size with a width:height ratio of around 2:1 for a horizontal layout, or 1:2 for a vertical layout.
  •         Click Save and get code.

2. Place the ad code on your approved site.

Copy and paste the ad code into the HTML source code of any of the pages on your approved site. We recommend that you place your Matched content unit directly below your article (below the fold), and either above or below an ad unit. See our best practices below, for more information on placing your Matched content unit.

Note: While your Matched content settings are propagating across our systems, standard ads may serve in your Matched content unit. To avoid this, please wait 15 minutes before putting this code on your site.

Placement of Matched content units

Matched content units work best for sites with longer content pages, such as in-depth articles, which have an associated image. For best results, we recommend placing your Matched content unit directly below the article (below the fold) and either above or below your ad unit. When placed directly above or below an ad unit, Matched content units can improve the visibility and engagement rate of your ad units.
